INTERNSHIP FOR PERFORMING A MASTER THESIS ON DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF CONTROL STRATEGIES FOR ADAPTIVE FAÇADES

The proposed master thesis will focus on the development of control strategies for adaptive façades.
The design of such strategies starts with the definition of a reduced model, able to capture the façade behavior with reduced computational time if compared to white box models.
The control strategies design will start with simple "if-then" rules (rule-based control) and will then try to exploit the reduced model (model-based control).
The control strategies will be implemented both into an energy simulation model and in real-time using a façade prototypes either installed at the Façade System Interaction Lab or in real case studies.
Comparisons between the reduced model vs the full model, the rule-base vs the model-based controller and the simulation vs real-time implementation will complete the project, providing interesting insight on the entire control design and implementation approach.
Within the thesis work, the intern will be asked to.
(i) design one or multiple Rule-Based control strategies to be used as baselines, (ii) define and identify a reduced, control-oriented model (i.
.
grey-box or black box) of the façade, (iii) set up the co-simulation environment to allow the implementation of the control strategies, (iv) plan and support the real-time implementation of the control strategy in the real façade (prototype or case study), (vi) analyze the outcome data (both simulative and experimental) to compare the different control strategies.
The main scope of the work is to:- Develop different strategies to control adaptive façades.- Test and compare strategies at simulative and experimental level.
The intern will interact with the Eurac team besides other national and international partners.

Definition of rule-based and model-based control strategies Development of the control-oriented model (grey-box/black-box model) Implementation and comparison of the control strategies Requirements.
Bachelor's degree in engineering Knowledge on building physics Knowledge on data analytics Base knowledge of coding (Python is preferred) Knowledge of grey-box modelling is a plus.
