PHD POSITION IN STRING THEORY AND PHYSICAL MATHEMATICS

Both are based at the University of New England (UNE) in Armidale, New South Wales under the supervision of Dr Jock McOrist.
The positions are in support of the two recent “Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project” project grants DP24.
\"Reaching new frontiers of quantum fields and gravity through deformations” joint with G Tartaglino-Mazzucchelli (UQ, Australia), P Bouwknegt (ANU, Australia), S Sethi (U Chicago, USA), A Sfrondrini (Padova, Italy); DP25.
“The Physical Mathematics of String Dualities” joint with J Knapp (Uni Melbourne, Australia), P Candelas (Oxford, UK), X de la Ossa (Oxford, UK), E Svanes (Stavanger, Norway).
The PhD projects will be centred on studying moduli spaces of string theory, in particular the role of their quantum corrections.
Methods for computing these corrections include using higher derivative corrections in supergravity, linear and non-linear sigma models and dualities and their connections to algebraic and differential geometry.
It is expected that the successful candidates will work on projects based at the University of New England with ample opportunities for collaboration between partner institutions listed above.
The scholarships include tuition fees and a living stipend.
The stipends are about AU$35k per annum () for 3 years.
Successful candidates must meet the minimum level of academic achievement and English language proficiency requirements.
Preferred candidates should have a strong background in theoretical and mathematical physics, with a good working knowledge of string theory, quantum field theory, general relativity and associated differential geometry.
Prior knowledge of supersymmetry, supergravity, conformal field theories, integrable field theories, and other topics related to string theory is preferred.
Applicants must have a MSc or equivalent in one or more of these topics.

•\tMasters/Honours thesis (if already available).
