CHIEF ENGINEER

Summary.
The Chief Engineer is responsible for the entire technical aspects of the yacht, taking responsibility for the preventive and corrective maintenance of the yacht.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities.
The Chief Engineer should ensure the uninterrupted working condition of the propulsion motors, diesel generators, pumps, compressors, steering, galley, deck and electrical and electronic equipment on board the yacht.
The Chief Engineer in a management role must direct the activities of the technical staff, primarily the 2nd Engineer, Communications officer and Chief Electrician.
In charge of and takes responsibility for the safe bunkering of fuel and lubricating oil bunkers, along with fresh water where necessary.
Liaises directly with the Master and Chief Officer and the Hotel manager regarding the day to day operations of the yacht, ensuring safety and compliance whilst giving the guests full satisfaction in their cruise.
Represents the company in matters with surveyors, government officials, shipyard representatives, repair firms, oil companies and ships chandlers.
The Chief Engineer ensures that he and his technical department carry sufficient spare parts and consumable materials to keep the yacht running smoothly.
Completes and monitors the Amos W maintenance system and ensures that she/he and his officers keep the data base up to date.
The Chief Engineer should promote good housekeeping within her/his department and the safe and efficient use of tools and equipment.
If it is seen that other departments need to address housekeeping then she/he should further discuss this with the Chief Officer and Hotel manager.
Walk through the entire Engine room and in so noting the condition of equipment and arranging maintenance and cleaning as she/he thinks fit.
The Chief Engineer should also make a walkthrough of all external machinery spaces such as fan rooms, steering gear and sail machinery rooms on a weekly basis, again noting defects and arranging maintenance as required.
Ensure that all regulatory paperwork is complete and filed in an efficient manner.
The Chief Engineer should always being assessing hers/his department and assisting those in need of training, so those with deficiencies can improve their standards.
Compile a written monthly report on the status of the equipment on board and forward this to the Fleet Superintendent and VPMO.
Monthly reports on lubricating oil, gasses and batteries etc.
should also be sent on a timely scale.
Should always respect the Guest areas by not wearing dirty work shoes and/or overalls The Chief Engineer should always be presentable in dress and ensure that both he and his department are presentable at all times and wearing the correct uniform and safety gear.
Always promote the use of English as the spoken language on the yacht.
Ensure that both he and his subordinates understand and follow the company SEMS.
Follow through with ongoing projects on board and ensure that they are completed, this especially comes after a change in Chief Engineers here some continuity can be lost.
Follow the disciplinary code where ever necessary and ensure that hers/his staff do the same, full unbiased appraisals must be completed by the Chief Engineer at all times.
Environmentally aware and promote this awareness throughout his staff.
The Chief Engineer should and the technical department responds quickly and efficiently with any guest related problems.
The Chief engineer should be aware of the company safety and environmental policy.
Understand the usage and information given in MSDS sheets and promote their use with his department.
The Chief Engineer at the end of hers/his contract should ensure a full written handover to her/his relief, following the company handover report forms and giving information on ongoing projects and goals.
Understand the rules and regulations stipulated in SOLAS and MARPOL and follow them.
Perform and manage other duties as assigned.
Perform social duties with the yachts guests as directed.
Requirements.
STCW 4th Part Basic Training Certificate of competence for the rank and yacht.
Computer skills with AMOS, Word and excel.
Excellent communication skills and ability to relate to guests and employees at all levels.
Must have ability to interface and maintain effective relationships with all departments and employees in a highly diverse environment and able to execute operational imperatives in a swift and demanding environment.

May be working in a hot and noisy environment and be aware of the suitable PPE to use in these cases.
Ability to work a loft (mast) when required.
Rotation is 3 months on 3 months off.
Regularly required to sit and stand.
Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
