ROLE The successful candidates will work within the European Institute on Economics and the Environment (EIEE), one of the three CMCC Institutes.
EIEE stands at the intersection of environment and economics, evaluating sustainable and socially inclusive strategies to combat climate change and other major environmental challenges.
EIEE is committed to improving environmental, energy, and natural resource decisions through impartial socio-economic research and policy engagement.
EIEE is a central hub for research insights and policy solutions, within Europe and internationally.
RESPONSIBILITIES The selected candidates will.
Maintain and improve the structure of the WITCH model (in GAMS, R and Python) Develop and integrate new modules (e.
.
trade, negative emission technologies, …) Contribute to distributed algorithmic design for scalable model runs Perform uncertainty quantification and robustness analysis on the model Collaborate in international research projects Couple the WITCH model to the larger model suite of EIEE and CMCC Exploit the capabilities of CMCC HPC to simulate large model ensembles Contribute to the objectives of the EIEE Institute and to its methodological suite Writing and contributing to European projects, scientific publications, and science-policy reports based on this work.
Present those at scientific workshops and conferences.
REQUIREMENTS Required Qualifications MSc\/PhD (recently completed or near completion) in Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or related field Solid programming skills (preferably in GAMS, R, Python, or Julia) Understanding of numerical optimization and large-scale model implementation Fluency in English; teamwork, and communication skills Preferred Qualifications Experience with IAMs or energy-economy-environment models Knowledge of decomposition algorithms or robust optimization methods Familiarity with collaborative software development tools (e.
., git) Experience with HPC and Linux DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS The position will be based in Milan CMCC office.
The appointment period will be initially 24 months, renewable pending a positive evaluation.
Contract and gross salary will be based on qualifications and working experience and competitive with major research centers in Europe.
