JUNIOR RESEARCHER FOR BIODIVERSITY MONITORING IN SOUTH TYROL (BRYOPHYTE IDENTIFICATION AND SURVEYS)

Institute for Alpine Environment The Institute for Alpine Environment performs problem-oriented research of mountain environments in the fields of landscape ecology, global change, biodiversity, ecosystem services and sustainable development.
For the started project "Biodiversity Monitoring South Tyrol" (BMS) we invite applications for the temporary position of a junior researcher in the field of bryology.
In addition to the work within the Biodiversity Monitoring the candidate will cooperate with the local Conservation Office of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/Bozen for the survey of EU Directive bryophyte species.
Besides profound knowledge of the European lowland and mountain bryophyte flora the ideal candidate has also experiences with vegetation surveys, lichen identification and European conservation schemes.
The working location is Bolzano/Bozen (ITA) and offers the possibility to cooperate with the most relevant biodiversity dealing institutions and authorities in South Tyrol.
Biodiversity Monitoring South Tyrol (BMS) is an ongoing survey of biodiversity that serves as basic research, but it is also intended to provide a scientific base for political decisions concerning spatial planning, agriculture, and nature conservation.
BMS surveys animal and plant groups that react sensitively to climate and/or land-use changes, at habitat and landscape level.
These surveys occur in 320 terrestrial and 120 aquatic sites distributed over the entire province of South Tyrol ( km²), including a large share of the diversity of habitats in the region.

Sorting of mixed BMS cryptogam samples into single vouchers Identification of the BMS bryophyte samples from survey seasons to with a special focus on protected areas and wetlands.
Investigation on bryophytes of the EU Habitats Directive in close cooperation with the Office for Nature Conservation of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/Bozen Pre-identification of BMS lichen samples (facultative) Survey of epiphytic cryptogam species within the BMS forest plots Analysis of the bryophyte data from the first five years of monitoring with possibilities for publishing Requirements.
Master degree in Biology or Environmental Sciences with specialization in bryophytes Profound knowledge of the European lowland and mountain bryophyte flora Experiences in lichen identification and vegetation surveys is advantageous High level of English, written and spoken, German and/or Italian skills are an advantage Reliable statistical knowledge, preferable in R Experiences in scientific analyses and publishing Driving license "B" Willingness and availability to work in alpine areas Good interpersonal and collaborative skills to integrate in a working group and to interact with associated researchers from various institutions We offer.
