he Ph.
.
position is intended for candidates interested to work in the field of 3D silicon radiation detectors under the supervision of Prof.
Gian-Franco Dalla Betta.
he Trento group (University and TIFPA-INFN) has a strong expertise in the development of silicon sensors for High Energy Physics applications.
In the past years, the research efforts have been mainly devoted to silicon detectors with three dimensional electrodes and active edges.
In particular, the Trento group has been responsible for the development of a new generation of small-pitch 3D pixel detectors, featuring extreme radiation hardness, which were finally chosen for the innermost tracking layers of the ATLAS and CMS detector upgrades at the High-Luminosity LHC, and are currently in the production phase.
esides radiation hardness, 3D detectors have attracted increasing interest for their inherent high speed, which is an essential ingredient to obtain a high 4D resolution (tracking + timing) as requested by future HEP experiments (e.
., the next upgrade of the LHCb VELO).
4D tracking detectors are also one of the main research lines of the recently launchedDRD3 Collaboration.
The Trento group in collaboration with FBK has pioneered the development of 3D detectors with trenched-electrodes, which allow for a more uniform electric field and weighting field distribution within the active volume, thus boosting the timing performance, and is currently working at the layout optimisation for column-electrode based designs.

research program will be focused on the design, simulation, and experimental characterisation of prototypes, both in laboratory and in beam tests, also in collaboration with Italian and foreign research partner institutions.
pplicants must have obtained/obtain a M.
c.
(or equivalent) degree in Engineering or Physics by October .
